Features

A source for every claim. Every citation checked.

Hand in a chapter you can stand behind. PaperQED suggests sources for the sentences that still need one, checks that each reference exists, flags retracted and weak sources, and shows the exact sentence in the paper that supports, or undercuts, each of your claims.

Get a source suggested for every sentence that needs one.

PaperQED finds the sentences in your draft that state a fact without a citation and suggests papers that back them, each with the passage that matters. Pick one and the in-text citation and bibliography entry are added in your citation style.

  • Every suggestion comes with the verbatim passage, so you can see why the paper fits.
  • Search in your own language and get English sources too, or the other way round.
  • One click inserts the citation and the bibliography entry, in APA, IEEE, Harvard or thousands of other styles.
  • Works in the PaperQED editor and in the Word and Google Docs add-in.

Catch fake and wrong references before your supervisor does.

Paste your bibliography or upload a DOCX, PDF, BibTeX or RIS file. Every entry is matched against real scholarly records and gets one of four clear statuses.1

  • Verified, Mismatch, Not found or Unverifiable, each with the reason behind it.
  • Wrong year or a missing author? See the difference next to the correct record and accept the fix with one click.
  • Handles APA, IEEE, Harvard, Vancouver, MLA and the messy mixed formats real bibliographies end up in.
  • A Not found entry comes with the closest candidate paper when there is one, so you can check it yourself.

Know when a source has been retracted, or isn't what it seems.

Every verified reference is checked for retractions, corrections and expressions of concern, and gets a source card: journal quartile, indexing, citation count, age and source type.1

  • A clear warning when a paper you cite was retracted, so it doesn't reach your examiners.
  • Preprints are marked, with the published version when one exists.
  • See the journal's SJR quartile and DOAJ listing at a glance.
  • Questionable journals are flagged with the list that names them and its source, never as a verdict.

See which sentences still need a source while you write.

The claim detector reads your draft sentence by sentence and underlines factual claims that have no citation yet, much like a spell checker underlines a typo.

  • Each sentence is sorted: factual claim, your own argument, common knowledge, or already cited.
  • Click an underline to see why that sentence needs a source.
  • Search for sources right from the sentence, in any language.
  • Runs in the background, so it never blocks your typing.

Check that each paper really says what you cite it for.

For every sentence and its citation, PaperQED finds the most relevant passage in the paper and labels the match. Every label comes with the verbatim quote, where it sits in the paper, a short reason and a confidence level.1

  • Four labels: Supports, Partially supports, No evidence, Contradicts.
  • Catches claims that go further than the source, like “proven” where the paper says “may”.
  • Every quote is checked to exist word for word in the source text.
  • The reason and confidence level show how sure the check is, so you know where to read more closely.

  1. Full text comes from open-access copies or PDFs you upload. When only the abstract is available, the result is marked “judged from the abstract only”. ↩

Hand in proof, not promises: the Citation Integrity Report.

One PDF sums up the whole check: how many references, their status, retractions, source quality, claims without a citation and the claim–source results. Attach it when you submit your thesis.

  • A single document your supervisor can read in minutes.
  • Each report carries a verification code, so nobody can quietly edit the results.
  • Anyone can enter the code on the public verify page and see the original summary.
  • Shows the work you did on your sources, not only the final text.

Word & Google Docs

The same checks inside Word or Google Docs.

Most theses are written in Word. The add-in brings the claim detector, citation search, claim–source checks and citation insertion into a sidebar next to your document, signed in with the same account.

  • No copy and paste between tabs: the checks run on the document you already have open.
  • Insert a citation and its bibliography entry without leaving the page.
  • Results sync with your PaperQED projects and library.
  • Works in Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

How it fits your week

Use it on the chapter you're writing now, step by step.

  1. Step 1: Paste your bibliography

Get the four statuses for every entry and fix wrong data before it spreads through the chapter.

  2. Step 2: Write with the detector on

Underlines show which sentences still need a source. Search for one without leaving the sentence.

  3. Step 3: Check claims against sources

Read the verbatim quote behind every label and spot the claims that say more than the paper does.

  4. Step 4: Revise your claims

You decide what to change: soften a claim, add a source, or drop a retracted one.

  5. Step 5: Attach the report

Download the Citation Integrity Report with its verification code and hand it in with your draft.

Questions

  • If a reference is “Not found”, is it fake?

Not necessarily. It means the reference isn't in Crossref, OpenAlex or Semantic Scholar. Local books, reports and some regional journals are often missing. PaperQED shows the closest candidate when there is one so you can check.

  • Which data sources does it use?

Crossref, OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar for reference metadata, the Retraction Watch database via Crossref for retractions, and SJR and DOAJ for journal data.

  • How does the verification code on the report work?

Each report gets a unique code. Entering it on the public verify page shows the summary as it was issued, so a supervisor can tell whether a printed report was changed.

  • Is all of this available today?

Yes. Citation suggestions, the reference check, source cards, claim detector, claim–source verification, the Citation Integrity Report and the Word and Google Docs add-in are all available now. You can start with a free account.
